Sydney Howland ‘15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Meet Sydney Howland, this week’s campus cutie and a sophomore Public Policy major here at Duke. Originally from Philadelphia, this gal’s smile and spunk made her a shoe-in for the campus cutie. We sat down with Sydney to get to know a little bit more about her and her love for bin candy, ballet, and Brussels sprouts.

What is your favorite place to eat on campus?

The Greek Devil because I love hummus, and the guy who works at it is so cool.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Absolutely Bradley Cooper.

What are the three qualities you look for in a guy?

I like a guy who is forward—not quite blunt but also not afraid to speak his mind. And I also look for a sense of humor and honesty.

What is your late night food?

Animal crackers. And hummus. But not together, although I’ve never tried that…

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

When I’m thirty? Yikes. I would just say happy and healthy with steady career.

What is your favorite place to go off campus?

Shooters. And any place with frozen yogurt.

What is your favorite song right now?

I’m not a country person, but right now it’s “Cruise” by Florida-Georgia Line. It’ll change soon though.

What is your favorite class at Duke you’ve ever taken?

Intro to U.S. Healthcare Policy taught by Professor Ubel. The class was just awesome.

What is your go-to Loyo order?

Original with bananas, blueberries, and golden grahams.

What’s your favorite kind of candy?

Chocolate-wise, I like dark chocolate. Other than that, I love Swedish fish, jelly beans, and just bin candy in general (who doesn’t like bin candy??).

What’s your favorite movie?

I have three go-to’s. The Breakfast Club, Finding Nemo, and Goodwill Hunting.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Either Brussels sprouts (ew) or cereal.

What organizations are involved in at Duke?

I am a PWAVES crew leader and I’m in Sabrosura, Duke’s Latin dance group.

What did you do this summer?

Through the DukeEngage program in New Orleans, I was a research assistant for an environmental health and justice organization called the Louisiana Bucket Brigade.

What’s your favorite TV show?

Right now, it’s “Rookie Blue”. I also really like “New Girl” with Zooey Deschanel. Or “The Good Wife”. But I hate reality TV.

What is one thing that nobody knows about you?

I’m in the Guinness Book of World Records! When I was in middle school, I stood on pointe with thousands of other people in Love Park in Philadelphia. The event was hosted by the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the group broke the world record for the most people on pointe at one time.

Would you rather:
Shooters or Devine’s: Depends on the night. You can’t make me choose!
Ice coffee or hot coffee: Hot.
Summer or Winter: Summer. Definitely.
Pancakes or waffles: Pancakes in general, but Eggo Waffles over pancakes.
Perkins or Bostock: I hate libraries. They’re too quiet and stressful.
Brodie or Wilson: Brodie. I like Brodie a lot better.
Sushi Love or Mt. Fuji: Sushi Love.
Loyo or Tutti Frutti: Tutti Frutti.
