SPOTLIGHT ON: Nicole Miller

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

“I have been watching sci-fi movies from the 80s lately! While designing the Spring 2013 collection, the colors and textures from these movies inspired me to experiment with new technologies juxtaposed with natural elements. I designed this collection for the modern girl finding herself in this new supernatural world.”

Her Campus Duke has the honor of having Nicole Miller as a sponsor for our Birthday Party, held tonight at Devines. Nicole Miller will be graciously giving our partygoers almost $10 000 worth in gift cards to spend on any item from the brand (I have my eye on a couple of dresses already!). But before you go and spend the next couple of hours perusing her website, here’s a little bit more about the upcoming collection and why a Nicole Miller piece is an absolutely necessary part of any girls wardrobe.

Miller’s background is eclectic to say the least. She was born to a French mother and studied both at the Rhode Island School of Design and Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. This unique education shows itself in intricate ways throughout Miller’s designs; allowing for simple, yet evocative clothing pieces that draw inspiration from a myriad of sources.

Miller’s latest Spring 2013 collection, as mentioned above, is inspired by the science fiction movies of the 80’s, which, considering the rise of vampires, werewolves and other sci-fi characters in recent pop culture, is entirely relevant. This particular source of inspiration means that Miller plays around with colorful, interesting prints on simple silhouettes. One of her designs shown below depicts this exactly—a classic power suit with a twist. Instead of the ubiquitous black, grey or navy material—Miller mixes it up with a fun print.

Now, it takes a pretty brave Dukie to rock this look (don’t put it past me, seriously), but there are many pieces in her new collection that would fit seamlessly into any wardrobe. Because of Miller’s sexy, feminine style, if you’re looking for that perfect formal dress that’s going to make you feel good and look amazing, I’d highly recommend Nicole Miller. In fact, I’ve chosen a Nicole Miller dress to wear to the Her Campus Duke event on Friday, 19th October (so be sure to look out for me!). I’ve handpicked some of my favourite pieces from Miller’s website and new collection to entice you even further.

The bold prints, eclectic colors and sexy lines are the perfect combination for that impending formal or date function. So listen to fashion forward stars like Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria and Halle Berry and pick Nicole Miller for your next purchase.

And remember to come by Devines tonight—the first 150 people will be receiving $50 gift cards toward your next Nicole Miller purchase!

Sabrina is a Junior at Duke University, and is double majoring in English and Public Policy. A born and bred South African, Sabrina has traveled to the USA to pursue her higher education. As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
