The “Power” of Bouncers: What You Need to Know about IDs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

To get or not get a fake ID is a big question that many underage college students find themselves asking.  Bouncers are scary. They want to exert their power over you while they’re still on the job. In addition, if you are under 21, they have a little power.  Her Campus Duke does not condone fake ID use, but with that said, we have some advice to help you along with your decision.

Fake IDs:

What can possibly go wrong?:

If you are in possession of a fake ID, you can be convicted criminally. If this happens, you will also lose your drivers license for a year and you will not be able to drive.

What can happen to the real owner of your ID?:

If you are caught using your friend’s ID in North Carolina, your friend can also be charged with a criminal offense. If the police call your friend after you get her ID confiscated, she should talk to a lawyer before speaking with them. If she is convicted, the DMV will also revoke her license for a year with no driving privileges.

What to do if you are turned down:

Walk away. You don’t want to escalate the situation and have your ID taken or get the police involved. It is never worth it to fight with the bouncer and provoke him. While his only real power is letting you in the bar, he can call the cops and tell them what happened.

Is it safe to use sites like ID Chief?:

Sites like ID Chief know what they’re doing—they put variations of the word “fake” on their IDs so they cannot be liable. It’s best to steer away from places like this.

Real IDs:

If you do have a real ID and get it confiscated, the laws are a little different. Your ID belongs to you.  Even if it is a fake ID, no civilian, not even a bouncer, can take it from you. If it is a fake, the police can take it—but only if it is actually fake.

Advice:

  1. Bring alternate forms of identification with you — your Duke ID, your credit card, anything with a picture or a name on it.
  2. Call the police — don’t let a bouncer take your ID. If anything, a police officer will show the bouncer you’re serious.
  3. Get the full name (and badge numbers) of everyone you work with — you may need to follow up.
  4. Remember you’re in the right. No one can take your ID and you are who you’re saying you are. However, you also need to make sure you don’t threaten anyone. That could come back to haunt you.
  5. Stay polite with the bouncer. He will, undoubtedly, have a bad attitude. He’s bored and trying to provoke you. Nothing good can come from yelling at him.
  6. Stand there for as long as you can without being threatened.  If you’re there for long enough, he might give it back.
  7. If the bouncer wants to fight you, walk away. We’re better than that. You can get a new ID sent to you in 10 days.
