An Open Letter to Society (Or Maybe Just a Rant)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Life is Hard. Yep, I said it.

It’s hard to know that 40 percent of women at Duke have experienced sexual assault and the majority of those women were Hispanic and African American.

It’s hard to know that you may never get paid as much as your white male counterpart, no matter how hard you work.

It’s hard to know that stretch marks on a girl’s ass are sexy but disgusting on my sides.

It’s hard to know that no matter how confident I look or how nice I look, I will always be the ugly friend because I don’t have a big but or a flat stomach.

It is hard to know that I will always feel self conscious in a bikini.

It’s hard when I have to hold my tongue when I’m anger so I don’t look like a “mad black woman” or “that ratchet girl”

It’s hard to never feel pretty.

It’s hard being lonely.

It’s hard when you get rejected.

It’s hard to speak up.

It’s hard not knowing what to expect

But in the end we all know life is hard.
