Today, I’d like to introduce you to a very good friend of mine. Meet Taylor.

Our relationship dates back to 2010. She’s a senior, and she’s my big. We knew we were perfect for each other from day 1, but things became particularly great for us when we realized our shared passion for food – making it, eating it, and talking about it. It’s our last semester together here at Duke, so why not go out with a bang? You know what that means – feasting our faces off. We’re looking to go up a pant size this semester, so you better tune in so we know it was worth it. Expect to see a lot of her (and her kitchen) from now on!

What better way to start the feasting and ring in the new semester than with a little piece of the best party of the year?

You guessed it….. MARDI GRAS!

Like Mama Duhé says, if you can’t go to Mardi Gras, bring Mardi Gras to you with your very own King Cake! But what’s a King Cake? Glad you asked! A King Cake is a sweet cinamonny dough braided into an oval, topped with sugary goodness and stuffed with a baby. That was not a joke. What else did you expect coming from Louisiana?

After Taylor hid the baby inside the loaf (guaranteeing one lucky winner the chance to buy next year’s King Cake), we decorated with icing and Mardi Gras colored sprinkles.

We were drooling, so we waited all of 15 seconds before we started digging in. And, if you can believe it, Taylor got the baby!!

This was a great way to kick off our foodie semester. We realize this isn’t a delight that everyone is lucky enough to partake in, but don’t you worry – we’ll be putting together some culinary masterpieces that you can make in your kitchen very soon!

Until then, laissez les bonnes temps rouler! (Taylor says that’s Mardi Gras for “let the good times roll!!)

Sabrina is a Junior at Duke University, and is double majoring in English and Public Policy. A born and bred South African, Sabrina has traveled to the USA to pursue her higher education. As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
