Making It Through This Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

1. Let yourself eat something sweet.

Whether it be the fro-yo from marketplace or the really big cookie at Twinnies, treat yourself to some dessert.  Sometimes when a day or a week starts to feel really long, letting yourself have something that you want helps make that day or week seem just a little bit better.  It helps break up the monotony that often sets in and can be used to incentivize yourself to complete a certain task like studying for that final or re-watching that super long lecture video.

2. If you start to feel overstressed I would highly recommend calling your mom.

For some reason, even the shortest conversation with mine can make me feel about a million times better and that is not an exaggeration.  There’s something about a mother’s caring tone and well meaning advice that just makes a wave of calm wash right over me.

3. Watch something funny.

Like eating something sweet, adding some humor in your life can easily make a bad day better.  Laughing at a joke or even just smiling drastically improves your mood and even has positive health effects.  Personally, I would recommend watching an episode of Parks and Recreation because the show never fails to make me laugh but also doesn’t suck me in to watching episode after episode.

4. If you even remotely like fitness, I would also recommend going for a run.

For some reason, jogging has this amazing ability to relieve stress and help me think through tough issues.  Having a fight with your roommate? Run!  Worried about an upcoming midterm? Run!  Feeling guilty about the dessert I just encouraged you to eat? Run!  Sorry if it seems like I’m pushing this whole running thing, but I am a strong believer in its calming powers.

5. Finally, no matter how long this week may seem, just remember that Spring Break is right around the corner.

A week of no classes and no midterms and no homework and no projects.  A week to either catch up on all the sleep that you’re currently lacking or a week to have an amazing time with some friends.  Whether you’re going back home or to some idyllic tropical location, you are merely days away from some sort of paradise.  Remember that as you stay up until 4 working on a math problem set.
