Keep Calm and Carry On

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Simple, bold and right to the point. The words “Keep Calm and Carry On” have become widely recognized in dorm rooms, offices and classrooms all over the world. Here at Duke is no exception. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters hanging on the wall of rooms on both East and West campuses. Admittedly, I did have a turquoise poster last year and, well, this year I just couldn’t resist the words printed over a Union Jack that I spotted at the poster sale. But, did you ever wonder what history lies behind the message? Or, why it has become so popular?

In 1939, during the beginning of World War II, the “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster originated in Britain. The Ministry of Information, part of the British government, published the poster as part of efforts to boost wartime morale by keeping the public relaxed and motivated. Two other posters were also published as part of this series: “Freedom is in Peril. Defend it with All Your Might” and “Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will Bring Us Victory.” However, the final poster, “Keep Calm and Carry On”, which had 2.5 million copies printed, was never fully distributed to the public. Only a limited number of people saw the poster and it is said that numerous copies might have been destroyed. In 2000, the poster finally resurfaced in a bookstore, where it has since been reproduced and republished in many different forms. The poster can now be found on aprons, mugs, nail polish bottles, t-shirts, iPhone cases and much more. The saying has also been altered slightly to say things like, “Keep Calm and Eat Cupcakes” or “Keep Calm and Call Batman.” Now, there’s a saying for everyone!

The “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters and other merchandise have become so popular that they would all make great gifts for this holiday season! And, looking at the message is a great reminder to get rid of some stress before the approaching final exams. So, just remember, Keep Calm and Carry On!
