This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Finding a place to live can be stressful, especially with the new housing model! So, I’ve compiled a list of off-campus housing that caters to Duke students. If you are living on campus next year, this could still be a good resource for the future! It’s never too early to plan where you’re going to live.

The 2009 off-campus housing survey that I refer to below ranked many apartments close to campus on a scale of 1 (unsatisfied) to 4 (very satisfied).

Check out this link for the full survey.

The Belmont

The Belmont received a mean score of 3.48 for the condition of the property and a 3.21 in safety. Most students recommended it and had nice things to say about the property. And the pool is an extra bonus!

Erwin Square

Erwin Square received a mean score of 3.06 with the majority of people recommending it. The location is great and you can easily walk to 9th street for fun restaurants and shops!

Erwin Terrace

Erwin Terrace received a mean score of 3.67 with all respondents recommending it. The close proximity to LoYo makes it mouthwateringly desirable!

Lofts at Lakeview

Lofts at Lakeview received a mean score of 3.67 for the condition of the apartment, with the majority recommending it. Some of the comments include: “Great amenities such as movie theater, computer kiosks and study rooms, printer/fax, movie theater, gym. The two resort style pools are beautiful and have barbecues and nice patio areas. Also, an events calendar with special events – for example, showing movies in the theater on Friday nights, wine tastings, mimosa brunches, cooking demonstrations, and more. Would definitely recommend living at the Lofts.” The only downside mentioned was the high price of rent.

West Village

West Village almost received a perfect score, but some students advised against the Phase 1 rooms because the walls that separate the rooms don’t reach the top of the ceiling, which could be awkward if you’re sharing the apartment. One person said, “West Village is an excellent place for graduate and professional students to live. They are also very pet-friendly for those with furry/feathered friends.”
