We have all heard the range of things that if you put in your hair are supposed to make it come out like a Disney Princess, but do any actually work? Some of us may have noticed a slightly better hair day after tailgate (and a thorough deep cleanse), but we took a deeper look into different products and results.

Beer
The Claim: The wives’ tale says this will increase volume and shine. Tailgate has given some evidence of the positive effects of the beer shower, but we needed a more controlled test. The volunteer for this beer trial hoped to add a little volume to her short dark bob.
The Result: After pouring beer into her hair over the sink we saran wrapped it for 30 minutes. One episode of How I Met Your Mother later she took off to the showers. The smell proved a little difficult to get out, but in the morning there were noticeable results. Her hair felt light and soft, but not the thickness promised. The biggest concern with this product was the smell. Even after a few shampoos, the hair had remnants of beer smell to it. Be careful when you use this so you don’t end up going to a class or interview smelling like tailgate.

Olive Oil
The Claim: To achieve a shinier silky do just add some olive oil. We had a positive feeling about this one as well, but were a little fearful it could result in disaster. No one wants their head to be confused with the BP oil spill. Our brave volunteer donated her Bieber-like do.
The Result: This was by far the easiest in execution. The only word of caution I would send is to be careful keeping it off clothes and face to avoid some stains and breakouts. As promised, her hair came out super soft and just the right amount of shine. We believe this had the most obvious results, and the least offensive smell in the process.

Eggs
The Claim: Strengthens and conditions hair…or so they say. To the science-oriented mind this seems to make the most sense. Hair is a build up of proteins, and egg whites are one of the purest forms of protein. We gave this one a whirl on some long dark Italian tresses to see if we could add a little shine.
The Result: Because she had such long hair we ended up using 5 eggs in our little experiment. While difficult to get the eggs into her hair we eventually got her under wraps for 30 minutes. A little tip, the eggs don’t really need to be refrigerated too much before hand, it ends up just causing a massive brain freeze and another dimension of #struggle. The next morning she found her locks to be thicker and possibly shinier. If you are looking to thicken your hair this is definitely your best bet. That is if you don’t mind hosting a breakfast buffet on your head for a while.

Mayonnaise
The Claim: Mayonnaise is supposed to be a great way to get deep conditioning and end up with soft shiny hair. Even though I have a nearly phobic relationship with mayonnaise, I tried this one myself. The promise of shiny hair was almost enough to deal with the terrifying easy-whip turkey sandwich image of my nightmares.
The Result:  The smell was awful. While washing my hands in the sink I forced a gag reflex in another innocent girl in the bathroom. She actually ran out of the bathroom dry heaving. Imagine sitting next to someone eating a tuna sandwich, now multiply that by ten. 30 minutes of torture and four shampoos later, I was feeling quite irritable. In the morning though I did notice my hair feeling thicker, and maybe a little shinier. Overall, it was not worth the hassle and possible residual odor.

While none of the results were jaw dropping, we had a great time in the process. This is a fun activity to add to spa Sundays, or a study break while we all get ready for midterms! Best of luck, and may your hair be shiny, silky, thick, and soft!
