A Guide to Hosting Your Own Dinner Party!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Dinner parties are one of my favorite things- I love the gathering of food, family, and friends!  Here are some ideas for your next party that are sure to impress!  I have also included photos from my own dinner parties to give you a bit of inspiration!

1.) Iron Chef Competition
Every year, my family has an iron chef competition.  Thus far, we’ve had a variety of secret ingredients, including limes, avocado, and Scotch bonnet peppers! My dad and I take on my mom and older brother in a competition that lasts for three long hours (my younger brother tends to excel in eating rather than cooking- we deem him the “judge” for the night). An ironchef competition between you and your friends is sure to bring out the Mario Batali in all of you!  Pick a secret ingredient, split into teams, and cook the night away!

2.) Slumber Party
Flashback to middle school slumber parties!  Whip out the Matthew McConaughey flicks (Wedding Planner, anyone?), order some pizza, make chocolate milkshakes, and snuggle up in your sleeping bags!

3.) Fairy Tale Themed Party
What girl doesn’t love fairy tales? For your next dinner party, make a variety of dishes inspired by your favorite fairy tales.  If you are a Cinderella lover, how about some pumpkin soup?  Or if you prefer Snow White, consider making candied apples!

4.) Fondue
Gather up your favorite snacks (strawberries, graham crackers, marshmallows, and pretzels) and slather them in chocolate!  Don’t forget the toppings!

5.) Traditional Tea Party
This past summer, I hosted a tea party to celebrate one of my best friend’s birthdays.  This party was SO much fun!  I made a variety of miniature desserts, a purse-shaped birthday cake, scones, and tea sandwiches!  We drank champagne (with raspberries for a special touch!) and indulged in sweet treats while jammin’ out to Frank Sinatra.  Doesn’t get much better than that!

6.) Mexican Fiesta
Considering how much everyone loves Dillo, this theme will definitely be a hit!  You really can’t go wrong with margaritas, chips, and queso!  A piñata might be a good idea too…

7.) Comfort Foods
Have all of your friends bring their favorite childhood comfort food!  Not only will this party give you a taste of your younger years, but it will also be a lot less work because everyone contributes a dish!

8.) Wine and Cheese
This party combines two of my favorite things- wine and cheese!  Make a cheese plate (I’m talking brie, mozzarella, gouda, cheddar, all the best, and serve with an assortment of crackers and bread!) Pair with a selection of wines, pop in some Bachelor episodes (we all know Ben is adorable… in a quirky, Zach Braff kind of way) and you’re all set!  Could there really be a classier way to fine dine pre-Shooters?
