Freshmen Plague 101: How to Make it a Little Less Terrible

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Being sick is no fun, and especially no fun during your first semester at college. However, getting the “freshman plague” at some point this first semester is almost inevitable. Here’s what you can do to make it a little less terrible.

1. Stay rested

Perhaps the most important way of avoiding getting sick or recovering more quickly is to get plenty of sleep. Trust me, I know that is a lot to ask of college first-years, but it really is crucial. Staying on top of your sleeping schedule not only helps in terms of germs and symptoms, but also in terms of how productive you are during the day!

2. Eat well

I know, I know. When you’re sick, a nice green salad or some grilled chicken might be some of the last things you want to see for lunch. However, eating healthy is important for keeping your body healthy and plague-free! It isn’t hard to find some healthy options on campus- and they’re pretty yummy too.

3. Stay on top of your schoolwork and other responsibilities

Please, please, please don’t let everything you have to do pile up during this plague season. By staying on track of your work and commitments, you are not only setting yourself up to be more productive and efficient, but I’m sure you’ll be able to get some more sleep too! It also feels pretty good to be productive!

4. Take advantage of Student Health

There are doctors, nurses, nutritionists, and pharmacists on campus! If you get sick, don’t be afraid to take advantage of these resources. Not only will your body thank you, but so will your hall mates and classmates.

Sending healthy thoughts, and lots of chicken noodle soup, tea, and cough drops!

XOXO
