Chances are, you’re trying to start eating healthier this semester.Everyone always says that. The funny thing is, it’s really so easy to do on a college campus. Duke vendors know our school is home to many men and women that are very proud of how they look and who work very hard to maintain their gorgeous bodies. So, the vendors cater (pun intended) to this. Here are a few healthy on-campus options that may be further out of the way than Chick-fil-a, but can help you eat better.
- My personal favorite, the black bean burger at the Loop. It’s a great option for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I know, because I’ve talked some of my non-vegetarians into trying it and they’ve all given it their stamp of approval. The Loop has marked it on the menu as one of their healthier options and it actually doesn’t taste like cardboard. Fair warning, they top it with ranch dressing, so you may want to ask them to hold that. It’s great paired with a piece of fruit.
- Pretty much anything from the Refectory. The Refectory goes out of its way to provide healthy, organic, freshly cooked meals for Duke Students. You can’t go wrong with their menu. If you’re one of those people who can’t decide on just one thing, they have the student special that includes half of a sandwich or wrap, a cup of soup, and a small dessert. I’ve never left either locations feeling guilty or excessively full. A must go to for Sunday brunch.
- The salad bar in the Great Hall is one of the largest salad bars in the area. Based on my experience, it takes a few tries to make a good one, but once you get it down, you can be guaranteed a healthy lunch or dinner. Just don’t go overboard on the dressing.
- If you’re at Alpine Atrium, both the hummus and tabouli salad and the Santa Fe chicken salad are great! They’re easy to bring to class when you’re on the run. I also highly recommend the acai berry energy smoothie. I don’t usually consume energy drinks but this one is all-natural and gives you a pretty good kick.
There are plenty of other calorie-counter friendly fooditems on campus. Eating well just takes a little effort and self-control. Once you get yourself in the habit, it won’t be hard at all. Good luck!
