We have all heard the saying that food is medicine, but can it also be makeup? The answer surprisingly is yes, and here are some superfoods that promise to give you a little extra somethin’-somethin’:
Â
The Good Guys
Â
Blueberries:
Why they’re awesome: number one source of antioxidants that help prevent premature aging (it’s never too late to fight those genes)
Where to get it: I’ve never seen blueberries around campus, so you might have to venture out to get them. If you do, grab a handful or throw them onto your yogurt or cereal in the morning
Â
Salmon:
Why it’s awesome: wild salmon (not the farm raised kind) is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids that help your skin stay moist, vitamin D which is good for strong teeth and bones, and selenium which helps protect you from the sun
Where to get it: pick up a salmon wrap at The Refectory, some salmon sushi at The Great Hall or Trinity Café (East Campus), the salmon sandwich at Pitchfork Provisions (I’ve also heard a rumor they have it at Marketplace, but don’t quote me on that) or add it to your salad at The Loop
Â
Spinach (and other leafy greens):
Why it’s awesome: contains lutein, which is good for your eyes, and also has a ton of vitamins and minerals such as: vitamin E, C, and B, iodine, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and calcium, just to name a few
Where to get it: make your own spinach salad at the Great Hall, and always opt for the spinach option whenever possible instead of iceberg, which contains barely any nutrients
Â
Tomatoes:
Why they’re awesome: full of lycopene and vitamin E, which have anti-aging properties
Where to get it: get a cup of tomato soup at The Refectory (always a favorite), the tomato mozzarella salad at Pitchfork Provisions and in The Tower, some pasta with tomato sauce at Marketplace or Great Hall, or add it to any salad, bagel or sandwich
Â
Walnuts & Almonds:
Why they’re awesome: have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E, which are both good for strong bones and glowing acne free skin
Where to get it: grab a handful for a snack, add them to your salad at the Great Hall or Marketplace, or throw them on your Alpine frozen yogurt
Â
Dark chocolate:
Why it’s awesome: has flavonoids, which help keep skin firm and moist, and also prevents against sun damage (caution: stay away from milk chocolate and try to grab a bar that is at least 60% cacao because milk chocolate provides little nutritional benefit and is loaded with sugar)
Where to get it: grab a bar at Von der Hayden, Place Under the Marketplace, Bryant Center convenience store, or in The Tower
Â
Yogurt:
Why it’s awesome: full of calcium, which is good for your bones, nails and teeth (remember: not all yogurts were created equal, many are full of sugar and artificial sweeteners so try to stick to plain whenever possible—Greek yogurt is also full of protein which will help you stay fuller longer and feel more satisfied)
Where to get it: if you’re looking for Greek yogurt, grab some at The Tower, Greek Devil or The Refectory (they also have a yogurt parfait that looks awesome), if you want regular yogurt you can go to Twinnies, The Tower, Marketplace or Great Hall, and for frozen yogurt head over to Alpine Bagels (they have awesome weekly flavors like Nutella and PB cup)
Â
Sweet Potatoes:
Why they’re awesome: full of the anti-aging antioxidant beta-carotene and vitamin A, which helps fight breakouts
Where to get them: Marketplace has them every once in a while, or you can add it to your salad at Great Hall for a good starch
Â
Avocados:
Why they’re awesome: have omega-3 fats, which are good for fighting breakouts and biotin, a B vitamin that helps hair and nails grow
Where to get it: snag some salmon avocado sushi (if you want to double up on some good omega-3s), or add some guacamole to your burrito at Dillo Grill
Â
The Bad Guys
Â
Too much dairy, refined carbs and sweets raise insulin levels, which can clog pores and activate oil glands causing breakouts
