1. How was your first semester at Duke?
My first semester has been great, actually! I’ve met a ton of amazing people, and learned a lot of things that I would have never imagined otherwise. Adjusting to the expectations here definitely took some time, though.
2. How are you coping with finals?
When I’m not actively studying, I pretend they don’t exist. It’s a terrible system. I’m terrified.
3. What is your favorite Christmas carol?
Mariah Carey’s, “All I Want for Christmas is You.” No doubt, next question.
4. If you were to audition for American Idol tomorrow, what song would you sing?
I would probably sing the Jackson 5’s, “Who’s Loving You.” It’s one of my favorite “big” songs that I always see people use on singing shows. The funny thing is, I can’t sing at all, so that audition would be really interesting to watch!
5. What’s been your favorite class so far?
My seminar class, without a doubt. It’s called, “Brazil, Race, Sex, the Body,” and it deals with the way that race, gender, and sex all tie together in Brazilian society. I remember being completely shocked my first day in class when we made a big list of all of the different words for sex, and ended the day’s discussion with the final message, “sex doesn’t really mean anything.” It’s been incredibly interesting and thought-provoking since then, often leading me to completely new ideas that I would have never considered before.
6. Who do you miss most from home?
I miss my dogs so much! I have two tiny little Yorkies that I was so happy to see over thanksgiving break. Apart from them, I miss my family, of course. My sister and I are very close, so being far away from her for so long has not been easy.
7. What is your favorite fall vegetable?
A sweet potato.
8. If there was a movie made about your life, who would play you, and why?
I think I would have Channing Tatum play me because we look so similar.
9. What’s your favorite app?
I really love the app, Afterlight! It’s a photo-editing app that has a ton of options and filters and things that I think really help make all of my Instagram (@carlosbarrero) pictures pop!
10. When it comes to Oreos, are you a twister, licker, or dunker?
Oh, I’m definitely a dunker, and if you do it any other way, you’re wrong.
