As a freshman, we all wonder at some point if we should go Greek or not. It is a complete myth that if you don’t go through recruitment you won’t make friends, or get your full college experience.  I thought about going Greek and ultimately decided not to and guess what… I love college. I have tons of friends that are both Greek and not Greek. Hell, both my roommates have been in sororities! I still can go to frat parties and hang out with frat guys, and I still am plenty involved on and off campus, all without being Greek! Not to mention I am saving a little extra money that I can put towards other things. I may not have a “big” or a “little” to love on, but I have friends who I get to shower with love instead. I have more free time and I was able to get an awesome job! Who knew I could work 40 hours a week, be a full time student, still go out and party, and still sleep!? YES it’s possible! Of course it is also possible to do all of that AND be in Greek life, but it still is a commitment you have to be willing to make.

Another thing girls worry about is needing to be in a sorority to put on a resume for a job or application to grad school. While this is somewhat true, it’s not the only thing that will set you apart from the crowd. I didn’t go Greek and I have a great resume! You have to take it upon yourself to do volunteer hours and get involved with clubs and organizations, but the resources here at DU are amazing at helping you get connected. Now, I’m not saying that Greek Life is bad, I think it’s great and for some people I think it is perfect. However, I am saying that if you go through recruitment and it doesn’t seem like it’s your thing, or if you don’t even want to go through recruitment, just know that college is great whether you are Greek or not and you will find friends and activities to do. So go Greek…or don’t. Just be happy with the decision you make and know that no matter which path you choose you aren’t alone!
