Spring Sorority Recruitment: The Aftermath

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

So maybe you went out to join a sorority last week during their spring recruitment and things just didn’t work out. We know how hard it can be, but instead of moping around and feeling sorry and down on yourself here are a few things you should do instead.

1. First things first, let yourself be sad – it’s okay to feel sad and disappointed (we understand it’s hard to be rejected based on your personality and things). Take some time for yourself. Take a nice bath, paint your toes, have a glass of wine, and snuggle up and watch a romantic movie and let yourself bawl. We have all been there…. it’s okay you will make it through.

2. HOWEVER don’t mope around too long, soon after (I did it the next day) sit down and make a list about your favorite things about yourself. Include things you’re good at, things you’re passionate about, your talents and quirks, and reasons why YOU are amazing. Recruitment is hard for everyone— the girls on the other end may love you and just not be able to invite you to join the sorority for number reasons. Sororities often have quotas they must meet but not go over and this makes the selection process very difficult.

3. Go ahead and friend the girls you really connected with on Facebook! Just because you didn’t make it in doesn’t mean you can’t still talk to them! You went out to make friends right? So do it.

4. Go out and find somewhere to volunteer on your own– sure it would have been great to be a part of a group that did the hard work of setting up volunteering opportunities for you, but not having that shouldn’t stop you! Check out local school listing for opportunities or google places near your location that involve things you’re interested in—local animal shelters, community gardens, nursing homes, orphanages, or schools.

5. Plan a movie night or a day trip to the mountains with friends and invite people you know from your classes. The whole goal was to meet new people and make friends, so do it; get out and make the most of this beautiful (yet crazy) Colorado spring weather.

6. And lastly, if you still really wanted to be a part of a sorority go out again when there is another opportunity! Try formal recruitment in the fall next time it comes around or even informal recruitment next spring if you can’t go out in the fall (ours falls when juniors would usually be abroad so they may not have the fall opportunity). It’s okay to try and join late!
