Hey Sharks! Manya and Katherine are back at it again with the spending of too much money on makeup testing! This week we decided to kill and chap our lips by trying out ten different lipstains, and we have some serious thoughts about all of them.

Disclaimer: Don’t try this at home, your lips will hate you. We also tried to exfoliate each night in an attempt to not dry out our lips completely. It may or may not have worked. #XtremeBeautyQueenz

Our criterion for these lipstains were fairly simple. In the lip stain system, the products are rated by two separate yet equally important criteria: the effects on the lips, and the quality of the products. These are their stories. (long-lasting, not drying, pigment and quality throughout the day, lack of transference)

Monday

Manya: Revlon Balm Stain in “Smitten,” $5.69

  • Minty, smells good

  • Application was smooth– smoother than I thought it would be

  • Stayed on (one coat) for like 8-9 hours (wowza)

  • Didn’t really come off while eating or drinking, or while applying chapstick

  • Kept lips soft, didn’t dry them out, and chapstick didn’t really move the color much at all

  • After like 9 hours though, it was kinda patchy, my lips were also starting to feel sticky. Reapplied and it was fine again!

Katherine: Maybelline Color Jolt in “Never Bare,” $6.99

  • Smells fruity, which is v nice, and no taste that I could notice

  • Application was smooth and went on nicely. The applicator was a little strange; it’s a sponge tip with a hole in the middle where the product comes out, I was a little shaken

  • Never really dried down, it was always kinda wet. But it did look matte!

  • Stayed for about four hours and then the stain lasted for about two hours after that

  • Didn’t come off while drinking water or anything, but did come off a little when messily eating a bagel from Einstein’s

  • Didn’t overall chap lips, but my lips did seem a little dry at the end of the day; granted that could have been because I forgot my chapstick and couldn’t apply throughout the day

Tuesday

Manya: e.l.f. Aqua Beauty lip tint in “dewy berry,” $4.00

  • At first I got really frustrated with it because I thought it kept coming off and it was supposed to glide on thicker

  • Then I read the box, apply thin layers and keep building to desired pigment after they dry completely

  • Doesn’t come off at all once dry, even when rubbed, licked, not even a little bit on the straw.

  • Doesn’t dry out lips, though it does feel kinda cool and tingly every once in a while as the color dries in the air

  • It’s just weird, but not a bad weird, like an odd feeling that is just very interesting to experience.

  • Tastes and smells really good, which is good

  • Very watery consistency which makes sense since it’s aqua beauty or whatever

Katherine: Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in “Kisses,” $5.39

  • DAMN, THIS COLOR THO. I’m a slut for everything dark nude so this was pretty great

  • Smells sorta vanilla sweet, pretty good, the smell did kinda linger after application which wasn’t my favorite thing in the world

  • Classic lipgloss applicator, very smooth and easy to put on and  get an even coat.

  • Dried down fairly quickly

  • The color lasted about six hours and the stain lasted a little longer after that

  •  Didn’t taste like anything and didn’t transfer onto anything.

Wednesday

Manya: L’Oreal Paris Infallible Paints in “DIY Red,” $7.99

  • This is interesting. It literally feels like paint and I’m not sure it’s actually a lipstain. Wow.

  • Why does this hate me so

  • I hate it I love it I hate that I love it.

  • It got everywhere. E V E R Y W H E R E.

  • The red did rock though! It was super bright and pigmented, but at the same time, there was no guarantee that it would stay where it was (and it didn’t)

  • It was on my hands, my face, my shirt. It stained my soul red.

  • I wouldn’t really buy it unless it’s in a nude just because it’s very bright and you can tell when the product moves.

  • On the bright side, it didn’t dry out my lips but also I couldn’t put chapstick on so really it’s a double edged sword.

  • I did cheat and reapply throughout the day because it was annoying and began to smear unless I cleaned it up constantly. The longest the color lasted was ~4 hours.

  • I have very mixed feelings about this one.

Katherine:  L’OReal Infallible Paints in “Spicy Blush,” $7.99

  • Really like the color, a nice everyday nude, not quite matte but not glossy either

  • It smelled like melted down lipstick. It wasn’t a bad smell, but it wasn’t a very good one either

  • The smell didn’t linger after application for that long which was nice

  • Took a while to dry down, and it did transfer onto anything I drank

  • The color didn’t really last that long, about three hours before it pretty much faded away

Thursday

Manya – Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain “Marvelous Mauve,” $14.00

  • It was such a nice color. Wow.

  • I look good in mauve. Why didn’t I know this?

  • It applied really well, though it did dry quickly so you gotta apply it really fast otherwise it will take itself off, not unlike an Expo dry erase marker.

  • It was lightweight. But like I also didn’t have chapstick with me so my lips dried out a tiny bit but the color stayed. It was nice.

  • I took a shower halfway through the day and reapplied, but I noticed I didn’t have to apply more than one layer, so like I guess something was working.

  • But like by the end of the day, there was still a bit of color left, and I think it did a good job of staining my lips.

  • Overall, I really liked it but I don’t think it was my favorite, just because while my lips didn’t feel chapped, they didn’t feel supple and healthy either.

Katherine: Sephora Collection Wonderful Cushion Matte Lip Cream in Wonderful Red, $8.00

  • First of all, the color isn’t red. It’s more of magenta, not a red

  • Application was weird, it was the same type of applicator as the Maybelline Color Jolt. This one was harder to get the product out tho. Idk I’m not a huge fan of these cushion applicator things, it’s just weird

  • It dried down REALLY quickly, almost like it was never wet in the first place

  • As the color dried down it also got pinker, which I wasn’t a fan of tbh; I wanted a red and yet that wasn’t what I got

  • While it did dry down quickly, it also seemed to get on everything I drank, it was on my water bottle, straws, and all my cups, which was annoying

  • Didn’t have any smell or a taste of any kind

  • Overall this wasn’t my fave, it just disappointed me

Friday

Manya: Covergirl All-Day Outlast in “Cinnamon” something, $7.99

  • Wow, this was such a good color, I apparently also look good in maroonish colors #shookshocked

  • Application was a bit iffy, because it was a darker shade, there was less room for errors and I just kept sneezing

  • The color stayed, but the product got a bit crumbly, which was uncomfortable

  • Because it was a double-product-application it felt really cakey but I’m not sure if that was due to the fact that my lips are DEAD or because the product is just thicc

  • It stayed on for quite a while. I really liked the topcoat stuff. It smelled really good and it was just super moisturizing

  • I put on a thick layer of the topcoat and it magically made the stain look like 2 shades more pigmented

  • I really like this, the color, the formula, and all, but I think I need to experiment a little better on the best way to apply it for me

Katherine: Covergirl All Day Outlast in “Brazilian Raisin”, $7.99

  • Not my favorite color of the week, but was still pretty

  • The balm needs to be applied throughout the day or your lips will get v dry

  • The color stayed on for a long time, it really did last all the day, like name the said

  • Didn’t have any noticeable  smell or taste

  • The application was smooth and easy to do, the only thing is that before you put the balm on, it is very sticky on the lips

  • It was VERY hard to take off, it really clung to the lips which is good during the day but it makes it SUPER hard to get it off at the end of the day

So, in conclusion, there were a few moral lessons we learned this week: firstly, do not wear a lip stain every frickin day. That is like doing an acid peel on your face every two days but also less severe. This is a bad example. Moving on… the stains that are often advertised as long lasting, only last as long as you don’t do anything with your mouth, ever. That sucks. And finally, finding the right products and colors for you is simply trial and error.
