Winter quarter can be pretty rough. It’s cold, it gets dark early, and you just don’t feel like doing anything. I always find it difficult to change anything during this time of the year; that’s part of why I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. But I do feel like Spring is the perfect time to make a fresh start. Spring is a wonderful time of year – it’s starting to warm up, plants are blooming, and the sun stays out late. All of these motivate me to make my life a little bit better for myself.

To make a fresh start, you first need to decide what you want your life to be like. Then, you should pick one or two things that that lifestyle includes. For example, if you want to be healthy, you can choose to eat healthier and exercise more. In this way, it’s kind of like making a resolution. But I also like to think of it as trying to make an impact on your life, rather than vowing to do something; resolutions seem much too strict and punitive if you mess up a little. With a fresh start, no one, including yourself, should expect you to be perfect in adjusting to new habits. If specific goals work for you, then go ahead and set them, but I, on the other hand, am going to try to go with the flow with my own fresh start.

I am a senior at the University of Denver double majoring in International Studies and History. I love to read, write, and knit. Being a part of HerCampus is great because I get to write about important and fun topics that have absolutely nothing to do with my coursework.
