How to Celebrate Halloween During a Pandemic by Maggie Coutts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Halloween this year may look a bit different, but don’t let that get you down! There are plenty of safe things to do this spooky season that don’t involve going out.

Here are some ideas to have a memorable Halloween without breaking COVID-19 guidelines.

Paint pumpkins

Painting pumpkins with friends or roommates is a great way to spend the night. Pick a theme for everyone to follow, or let everyone choose their own idea. To spice things up, make it a pumpkin painting competition and pick a winner of the night. This allows you to stay indoors and still have a good time.

Movie marathon

Grab your favorite snacks and watch classic Halloween movies. You can still celebrate the holiday without leaving your couch. Watch some scary movies and see Michael Myers back in action, or if you’re not into scary movies, relive your childhood with Halloweentown and Hocus Pocus!

Bake

The Pillsbury picture-printed sugar cookies are a must for the holidays; grab a couple boxes and pop them in the oven. If you’re looking for something more interactive, bake sugar cookies from scratch and decorate them yourself. Try having a small gathering (adhering to CDC guidelines) and turn it into a cookie decorating competition. The winner gets to pick the movie for the night!

Have a costume Zoom party!

If you’re looking forward to dressing up, have a virtual costume party! Dress up as whatever you want and have people present their costumes over the camera. Everyone can send in a vote for best costume and crown a winner. This is an easy way to dress up, enjoy time with friends, and celebrate the Halloween spirit!
