Kendyl Kingsley

April Vollmer

HerCampus DU has experienced an influx of new writers for our team! Get to know Kendyl Kingsley, a sophomore International Studies and Criminology double major, and April Vollmer, a freshman Psychology major!

What is a fun fact about you? Kendyl: While a group of girls and I were fundraising for club sports with Sodexo, a miscommunication happened on where to meet, and ended with us being kicked out of the lower levels of the Ritchie Center by secret service when Joe Biden was visiting campus.

April: Uhmm… I can lick my elbow!

Why did you come to DU? Kendyl: I’ve always loved Colorado, and I knew I wanted to go to school here. So, when I came across DU and saw where it was located, what the campus was like, and what it had to offer academically, it just felt like the right match for me.

April: I feel like I am a part of the school and community here. I feel that the administration and staff here really care about the health and happiness of all students to the best of their abilities.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about DU? Kendyl: My favorite part is probably the campus itself. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, it’s always gorgeous here. That being said, I have a vendetta against Sturm. The numbering in the building is one of the more infuriating things that I’ve encountered here.

April: My favorite part is the beautiful environment on campus, the people, and scenery. My least favorite is the outdated heaters in the freshman dorms.

Why did you join HerCampus? Kendyl: I had a friend who wrote for HerCampus, and she talked me into going to a meeting and seeing what it’s like. After looking at the webpage and reading some of the articles I decided to give it a shot.

April: I enjoy writing and sharing my ideas with friends, family and peers. HerCampus gave me an area to speak my mind as a female in today’s climate.

How did you get into writing? Kendyl: I think that I probably became interested in writing through a mixture of school work that required me to write and reading works that others had written. When I would read a lot of articles my first instinct is to critic the information and opinions in them, and it got to the point where it became an issue of okay why not try it out yourself then.

April: I fell in love with literature during my freshman year of high school, and my love for it grew each year taking it. I am fascinated how much our language impacts our lives and those around us and far from us, as far as across the world. It’s amazing how each culture and language has a method, literature, to accumulated knowledge and attempt to understand it. Writing for me is a way to try and comprehend myself and life.

What are your favorite pieces to write? Kendyl: My favorite pieces to write are probably reviews or summaries on events happening on or around campus. I enjoy attending them, and I like to let people know what they’re about and what my thoughts were on them.

April: Writing about current issues, healthy lifestyle choices, and sometimes just rambles about a certain theory or point of view is a good time.

What else do you do in your free time? Kendyl: Reading has probably been my biggest hobby since I was about ten. From news articles to novels to biographies, I will read just about anything. Other than that, I’d say my favorite pass time is just hanging out with my friends, it doesn’t matter if it’s on campus, in the city, or the mountains, we generally end up having a great time with one another.

April: I enjoy biking, spending time with friends, being with my family, exploring the world with people I love, and treating myself.

What is one piece of advice you would give incoming freshmen? Kendyl: Don’t be afraid to try new things. Join a club that’s completely out of your comfort zone, go to one of the numerous events always being held on campus, or just start a conversation with a stranger in the dining hall. You never know what you may come across, and you don’t know if you’ll like something until you try it. They say college is the time to reinvent yourself, so go for it!

April: Be yourself in everything you do and things will fall into place! I promise!
