Relationships. What do they mean to you? What even is a relationship? When fighting with your significant other over their relations with others, where do you draw the line, or rather define, what “counts” as cheating? That is, what actions do they have to complete and/or feelings do they need have in order for you to no longer want to stay in a committed relationship with them? Or, if you are in a polyamorous relationship, where do you find yourself making boundaries of your relationship and the relations your partner can have with others?

In a different shade, we also have relationships with inanimate objects, songs, celebrities, and really anything that is not a fellow human being. Do you ever think about your relationship with your broom? Your make-up brushes? Do you even consider this connection, well, really usage of an object, a relationship? According to Google, a relationship is “the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.” So, really all that is needed is some type of connection.

Sometimes our relationships can get obsessive and addictive, like when we begin to love shopping more than paying rent, or when our love for that feeling of adrenaline when gambling is worth more than our retirement savings. It’s a bit easier with non-humans, but we can also get this way with our attachments to other people.

So, in light of the complexity of this topic, Her Campus DU is exploring this topic of relationships.
