The Government Shut Down and it’s Not A Surprise

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

It’s been one year since Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2017. The amount of people at his inauguration compared to the plethora of people uniting against him today tell a story about the United States’ new wants and needs.

This administration has brought horror and devastation to the many communities that were already oppressed (see ‘100 Ways, in 100 Days that Trump Has Hurt Americans’), while also continuing to actively hurt American values. That’s why there are around 6,000 groups mobilized to resist this administration, and these are just groups registered with Indivisible in November 2017. The sheer amount of grassroots activist alone is a hopeful sign for change, which is pushing the citizens with the ability and drive to fight the administration to do so. Grassroots resistance groups are fighting each day to counterattack lobbyist who are over representing corporations interest instead of the wants and needs of the American people as a whole (see ‘How Corporate Lobbyists Conquered American Democracy’).

The resistance is spreading through the government little by little. These victories include the many “firsts” to show a more accurate representative of the people of our country (See ‘Meet the progressives elected after trump‘). Despite the administration being so chaotic and unrepresentative of the people of the United States, there is still hope seen in the activism of the citizens themselves rising to the government level. The government has even shut down with many Democratic leaders protesting the disregard by the administration of 700,000 undocumented American citizens.

These times seem dire but there are people fighting for the rights of those who cannot fight for themselves.
