The Feminist Ad We All Wanted

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

It’s seems that today in the U.S. nothing is off limits for being portrayed as “sexy,” and usually with this portray is a sexy female. Burger ads, cowboy boot stores, song artists, and many more companies trying to sell an image using “sexy” females to promote their product. It seems that almost everywhere we look, our culture is catered to men. I mean, think about how hard it is to find comfortable clothing that don’t display your assets. To learn more about objectification, start here

A few days ago, however, a company called SUISTUDIO, has taken this norm and reversed it, catering now to women. Recently, their ads have taken the world by storm, for their new advertising pictures objectify men in the same manner women are objectified in our media. Here is the first picture on their homepage (not pictured, the additional words: “Not Dressing Men”).

As you continue to scroll, the pictures continue to show empowered women, dressed in beautiful suits (as a man would typically be) along with objectified men (as a woman would typically be). As Avery Matera stated in TeenVogue, “Since women have historically been treated as props in advertising, it’s powerful to see a clothing line flip gender roles, making a progressive statement in the process.”

Then, included are women empowered solely next to the objectification. I interpret this as a reminder of women’s independence and empowerment without the help of man.

This company’s mission statement is: “Like its older sibling Suitsupply, Suistudio focuses on ensuring a perfect fit and modern aesthetic through its expert tailoring and use of only the finest fabrics from world-renowned Italian mills. Having power suiting at its core, the collection is an array of chic, impeccably tailored silhouettes — a paradox of powerful and playful, it’s a no-fuss look that means business. Take a browse through our new collection and it will soon become apparent: we specialize in suits, but we’re not dressing men.”

They are definitely tailoring to women in many different ways! Click here to check out their images.
