Going abroad was the best opportunity I’ve ever had to go have fun. I got to see and do things that I might never have gotten to see and do otherwise.

I studied abroad at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. While there, I felt like I was constantly on some type of adventure. Everything from navigating a new grocery store, to hiking a mountain, to planning a solo road trip (and then going on it) was an adventure.

If you’re on the fence about going abroad, ask yourself one simple question: when am I ever going to get this opportunity again? Most of you are likely to say never, especially if you understand just how much DU helps us to go abroad. There’s this amazing thing called the Cherrington Global Scholars, which, if you didn’t already know, pays for your round-trip flight to your study abroad location if you have a 3.0 GPA or above. If you use this right, you can add a trip at the end of your abroad experience. I went to Australia before I came home, and those additional flights were paid for with the Cherrington Global Scholars because I booked all my flights at the same time.

Some of my favorite adventures from my time abroad are:

Sea Kayaking
Stand-up paddle boarding and seeing glow worms in a little cave (not pictured because they’re too hard for the camera to see).
Visiting Hobbiton
Seeing the Little Blue Penguins (the smallest penguins in the world!).

No matter where you decide to study abroad, you can go on some amazing adventures. The journey itself is an adventure. I encourage you to make the most out of this amazing opportunity and have your own adventure of a lifetime.

I am a senior at the University of Denver double majoring in International Studies and History. I love to read, write, and knit. Being a part of HerCampus is great because I get to write about important and fun topics that have absolutely nothing to do with my coursework.
