Coronavirus is upon us. With spring break drawing near, some of us may still choose to travel either home or on vacation somewhere (especially since flights are so cheap!). The CDC recommends holding off any unnecessary travel, especially to high risk locations, but if you do choose to travel by airplane, here are some tips to stay as healthy as possible.

Wash your hands frequently

The best way to prevent the spread of disease is to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have access to soap and water, use at least 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Also, as much as you can, try not to touch your face, specifically the T-zone of your face.

Only wear a mask if you’re sick

This may come as a surprise, but wearing a mask doesn’t actually help protect against viruses much, according to the CDC. Unless you’re already sick and trying to prevent others from getting sick, a mask won’t actually help much.

If you can, try to get a window seat

If you have to ride in an airplane, the window seat is the best place to be, since you will come into less contact with potentially sick people that move along the aisle. Also, before you touch or use any communal surfaces, it’s best to wipe them down to disinfect them first.

Pack these recommended essential items while you travel (if you can find them, of course)

– Small packs of Kleenex – if you have a cough, coughing into these will help prevent the spread of disease

– Travel hand sanitizer

– Fingernail clippers – keeping your nails short will decrease your chances of contracting Coronavirus

– Disinfectant wipes – to wipe down communal surfaces

Stay healthy, and remember, avoid travel if you can, especially if you’re feeling sick!
