Zorbey Canturk, Vice President of Sigma Phi Epsilon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

Meet Zorbey Canturk! He’s a junior Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics major all the way from Istanbul, Turkey. As an avid soccer fan, most weekends Zorbey can be found watching a European soccer live stream from his computer. “It’s like a religion back home,” he notes.

When he’s not watching soccer, Zorbey enjoys reading non-fiction and watching British dark comedy films. Canturk is quite selective about the media he chooses to consume because he doesn’t have much free time. As the Vice President of Communications for the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, Zorbey has his hands full managing a cabinet of 12 people. “It is a pretty underrated job. People only recognize the cabinet’s existence once something goes wrong,” Canturk explains. He manages external communications with other chapters nationwide, and coordinates internal communication via listservs, a regular newsletter, and social media. Other responsibilities of his position include monitoring the website and keeping membership records up to date.

While the position is demanding, it is also extremely rewarding. Zorbey is always up to date with every part of the fraternity and it has made his time at Drexel quite valuable. His experience as Vice President of Communications helped him land a position with Comcast for his second co-op. He excelled as a data analyst and technical program manager, ultimately helping to shape his future career path. “So much for studying mechanical engineering at Drexel!” he jokes. After graduation, Zorbey hopes to find a challenging career that would also allow him to enjoy life to the fullest. He doesn’t have a particular geographic location in mind, so the possibilities are endless!

For now, Zorbey is enjoying his time at Drexel. He has been on the varsity swim team and is a current member of Pi Tau Sigma Honor Society. In addition, he also co-founded the Drexel Robotics Club. All in all, becoming a member of Sig Ep in the spring of 2011 has had the most positive impact for Canturk.

For the last 3 years, Sigma Phi Epsilon has actually been the most successful fraternity on Drexel’s campus. They have received 3 Dean’s Cups and 2 Greek Week Championship Cups, with the most notable of their awards being the Buc Cup, which headquarters awards to the best Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters amongst the nation. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Drexel’s Sig Ep chapter has also maintained the highest cumulative GPA out of all of Drexel’s fraternities.

When Canturk isn’t too busy with Sigma Phi Epsilon, he loves to watch SNL. He even has a robust laugh that tends to bug his roommates. “They complain about how loud I laugh when I’m watching that show” he remarks. Other than SNL, some of his biggest interests since moving to the US 4 years ago have been following seasonal sports and holidays. Like many Drexel students, Zorbey is extremely excited for March Madness and Erin Express this year!

Zorbey is a passionate, fun, and driven individual, no matter where in the world he ends up, he is sure to be a success!
