Valentine’s Day tends to get a bad rap. Single people complain about being alone and not having anyone to spend the special day with, and people in relationships complain about finding something to do or buying a gift. It seems whether or not you’re in a relationship, people find a way to complain about Valentine’s Day. My question is, why is this happening? It’s a holiday to celebrate – why are we finding reasons to hate it? In my opinion, Valentine’s Day is one of the best holidays around, and here are some reasons why:

1. It is during the worst part of the year

Valentine’s Day is in February. January, February and March are probably some of the hardest months of the year. March ends nicely, but during the months of January and February, it is pitch black and freezing all the time. It is a difficult part of the year to deal with and a lot of people struggle to not feel stressed or depressed about the weather. Valentine’s Day is a huge break from this! It is one special day in February that you can look forward to. CVS gets overloaded with pink and red candies, stores decorate their windows and there are usually good rom coms being played on the T.V. What is not to love?

2. When you were in grade school, this was actually the best day of the year

Does anyone remember getting ready for Valentine’s Day back in elementary school? I certainly do. It involved at least two excursions to the grocery store or CVS to get pounds of candy and tons of small Valentine’s Day cards. You would proceed to fill these cards out, tape candy to them and pass them out to all your classmates on the big day. In return, you would get tons of Valentine’s Day cards back. Your entire class was your Valentine and it was awesome. If you are bitter about Valentine’s Day this year, think back to then. If you really are not a fan of the holiday, maybe try to think of it as a sentimental one instead and remember how much fun it used to be.

3. It doesn’t HAVE to be about having a special someone

Honestly, come on people. If you just had a break-up or have been single for a while and you feel lonely, I get it. Break-ups and being single can be hard, but why make a day that could be fun, suck? Celebrate yourself on Valentine’s Day! You don’t need anyone else! TREAT YO’ SELF. Also, you don’t have to celebrate a significant other on Valentine’s Day. You can celebrate anyone you love – your dog, mom, dad, friends… do I have to go on? Use this day to call your mom, dad, uncle or aunt and tell them you love them; it will make their day and you’ll feel great afterwards.

4. Chocolate

Need I say more? If nothing else, the amount of chocolate in the CVS or Walgreens on your campus should boost your mood.  The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups also come in heart shapes which double their size, so that is a bonus too.

In today’s world, it seems like people find a reason to complain about anything and everything. Not going to lie, I am guilty of this. However, complaining about Valentine’s Day because you’re single or can’t find your partner a gift is silly. It should be a day you enjoy and to celebrate the loved ones around you.
