A Review of the Final Presidential Debate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

Let me preface that I hate both candidates but I am so settling for Biden. This debate was still stupid and I felt I lost more brain cells, but I am really glad they chose to mute microphones. I also feel like Trump listened to his advisors/campaign managers to shut up because he sounded relatively less like a little prick (emphasis on relatively!!). PSA: This article is mostly anti-Trump.

Firstly, Trump did not walk onto the stage wearing a mask, but Biden did. For someone who just recently had COVID-19 because he refused to wear a mask, he looked like an idiot for coming into the debate bare-faced. Trump also lied about the vaccine; he said a vaccine will be administrated in a few weeks, but when the moderator asked about it, he backpedaled, saying it was not a guarantee. Trump cannot just make promises about a vaccine and then say, “lol just kidding :)”! When the moderator asked Biden about COVID-19, he said he was going to invest in rapid testing and also encourage mask-wearing – something Trump refuses to do. Trump also refuses to take responsibility for the hundreds of thousands of American deaths due to his incompetence during the pandemic. When Biden and the moderator asked about it, he said, “I take full responsibility” and then not even ten seconds later, he said, “It’s China’s fault.” I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like taking responsibility.

One thing I noticed about the debate was how Trump was praising the U.S. farmers, but so many farmers in the States are undocumented immigrants. You cannot continue to abuse your power by separating families and villainizing undocumented people while supporting the very industry they hold on their shoulders. He also never answered the moderator’s question about how he is going to reunite children with their parents, which is absolutely absurd. He also does not know the difference between Hispanics and Latinx because he kept saying “Hispanics” when referring to Latinx people.

Moving onto the BLM movement, Trump said, “Nobody has done what I’ve done for Black people.” The fact he said this, coupled with the fact he refused to condemn white supremacists in the last debate, is horrific. The absolute hypocrisy and nonsense pouring out of his mouth are disgusting. Biden even said Trump had pushed for the death penalty during the Central Park 5 case (even though he was not president then). How is he helping Black people when he sent troops to attack BLM protesters? At this debate, Trump had the audacity to say he was the least racist person in the room. Was Kristin Welker, the black moderator, just a hallucination to him? On top of this, he said this summer was the first time he had seen a glimpse of the BLM movement, but BLM has been around for much longer than this – not to mention the fact that he’s been around since before the Civil Rights Movement.

The last issue I wanted to talk about for the debate is climate change. When confronted about neglecting science and climate change, Trump simply said, “We have the cleanest air and the cleanest water.” I’m sorry, but I didn’t realize the California fires were just a fever dream, and Flint, Michigan magically got clean water overnight – how great!!

Again, I will say that I do not like Biden. However, I would rather vote for an actual orange before I voted for the fake orange that’s in power right now. Yes, this article was Donald Trump slander but as a bisexual, first-generation, low-income, woman of color, I cannot be quiet on how his rhetoric and actions have hurt not only me but the people around me.
