This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.
Bringing passion and energy to her multiple extra curricular activities, Nithya Thangaraj is one of LeBow college’s star pupils and she’s only a sophomore! Along with being the Co-President of DECA, a career preparation organization, she also acts as a Peer Leader and Coach for incoming business students.
Originally from Fremont, California, her sense of adventure took her to the east coast, over 3000 miles away from her family. Whenever she is asked why she moved she asserts she loves “being thrown into unfamiliar territory” so she can learn more about herself while experiencing totally new situations.
Her interest in entrepreneurship began in high school when their DECA organization showed how, in business, she could be creative while interacting with different types of people. She decided that business sounded much more appealing than orthodontics. The Drexel chapter has only been around for two years and is focusing on recruitment and spreading awareness and the benefits of joining this marketing and entrepreneurship club. DECA is a nationwide organization that holds conferences throughout the year to enhance students’ networking skills, help them interact with other colleges, and test their business skills. They offer events and competitions for every concentration of business allowing more opportunities for networking which will come in handy for Nithya as she prepares for her first co-op.
HerCampus actually caught Nithya right after her favorite holiday, Halloween! She loves the fun and spooky atmosphere plus the ability to dress up in all the different costumes. Besides being a Halloween fanatic, she also participates in Bharatnatyam which is classical Indian dancing that she has been doing for the past 13 years. Since she’s so far away from her family in California, she enjoys the activities that remind her of her roots and keep her immersed in her Tamil heritage.
Freshman, if you’re lucky, you’ll wind up with her as a peer leader helping you take on this wonderful campus. For everyone else, join DECA so you can see how awesome Nithya is in person!
