Mary Babyak, Living Proof That Change is Good

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

As the spring term nears its end, freshmen are preparing to be sophomores, applying to co-ops and looking forward to their last summer of pre-adulthood. One of our newest writers, Mary Babyak, is the example of how you can enter your freshman year having your life planned out and see that thing’s don’t always go as planned.

A Blue Bell, Pennsylvania native, Mary initially attended Drexel as a chemical engineering major. However, not too far into her first fall term, Mary switched to her current major as she felt that her skills were best suited for the business world. Mary is a freshman at Drexel who manages to be an extremely active member of the campus community and a dedicated student, all while handling the day to day stress that comes along with her illness.

Mary is currently majoring in finance and legal studies at Drexel. Being an academically strong student is hard enough for any student, but Mary manages to be a member of various organizations on campus, including Drexel’s Women in Business, Phi Mu fraternity, as well as being a part of our editorial team here at Her Campus at Drexel.

Being active on campus is very taxing for Mary because she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, making common daily activities difficult to perform on a daily basis. Despite her health issues, Mary wanted to be an active member of the organizations she is passionate of. Which is why she joined the Philanthropy committee for Phi Mu and is currently the marketing chair. Mary’s jobs as marketing chair entail helping with fundraising, planning events and getting sponsors for philanthropy events. Phi Mu’s philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (CMNH) is near and dear to Mary, which makes fundraising and giving back very rewarding.

After graduation, Mary plans to attend law school at the University of Pennsylvania. After realizing that she wants to move into the business world, Mary feels the need to be surrounded by girls with similar goals in mind, which is why she is a member of Drexel’s Women in Business. The club meets once and month and holds networking events and seminars that strengthen business skills while also allowing students to interact with people in their major outside of the classroom.

Some of Mary’s interests outside of school include health, fashion and exploring Center City, Philadelphia. Mary’s interest in Philadelphia has influenced her to join Her Campus to write about what’s new in the city around us, whether that be fashion, restaurants, or local events. Even though she never anticipated writing in college, she enjoys the freedom to write something besides an essay.

Being apart of clubs allows Mary to interact with every type of girl on campus. She is able to be closer with girls that have the same goals and ideals as her. She’s the proof that there is always room to grow, even in a relatively small school. When Mary isn’t bouncing from class to meetings, she’s either going on runs, cuddling with her dogs, or enjoying her time with family and friends.
