Editorial: You CAN Wear Navy and Black Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

When did wearing black and navy together get a bad rep? Both are colors that when worn together correctly can look great, so why is it so taboo? I guess it’s for the same reason that people still think it’s a sin to wear white after Labor Day. I’m here to advocate for the use of black and navy together in one outfit, because some people could use a fresh take on their fashion ideology

In season 10 of Project Runway, designer Dmitry Sholokhov received high marks for his black and navy cocktail dress for the Lord and Taylor challenge. He used color blocking to marry the two colors together and the finished product on model Katt Vogel looked sleek and hot. Sholokhov went on to win that season of Project Runway and out of all the great looks he created, I remember his black and navy cocktail dress best.

Black and navy have also been seen a lot at the big runway shows, including the 2013-2014 Fall/Winter ready to wear collections of designers Calvin Klein, Elie Saab and Chloe.

Even our military mixes navy and black!

It’s time to finally break free from black and navy myth and gear up for some great black and navy winter fashion. I’ll see you on campus rocking my mixed fashion!
