Meet Cassie Homer! She came to Drexel from Palmyra, right outside of Hershey, PA, which means she knows a lot about chocolate. Anyways, as a sophomore English major, this girl already knows what she wants to do when she graduates and has been set on this career path since high school. Publishing is her passion and she’s taken every opportunity offered to get there. She’s been involved with the Drexel Publishing Group and now works for The Triangle as a copy editor and as a Peer Reader at the Writing Center. Despite her commitments to various publishers, she fills her free time by reading fiction, wasting time on BuzzFeed, discussing Dance Moms, and chugging coffee.
Cassie just joined the Drexel Writing Center after completing the pre-requisite course WRIT 210 and can’t wait to start reading her peers’ papers. Excited by the environment and the team members, it solidifies her passion of editing. She’s quick to praise her fellow peer readers, describing them as “a group of talented people that really care about the work [they] do” who help keep her motivated. Since the focus of the Writing Center is to provide a variety of writing support to Drexel students, it helps Cassie experience what it’ll be like once she is an editor for a publishing company. She helps anyone who comes to the basement of MacAlister Hall, ranging from freshmen with writing assignments, graduate students with anatomy papers, and students with chemistry lab reports.
Along with the Writing Center gig, Cassie edits for The Triangle, Drexel’s independent student newspaper, after being encouraged (ok, pushed) by a friend to join. If you’ve picked up a copy in the past few months, you’ve seen her editing skills. She reads up to three articles a week, checking for minor grammar mistakes and factual accuracy before sending it up the totem pole of editors until it reaches the Editor-in-Chief, Julia Casciato. Since grammar plays such a crucial role in her job as a copy editor, she’s learned more than she ever wished to know about it and she’s only been working there a month or two!
Happy with all of her writing and editing experiences here at Drexel, Cassie has enjoyed meeting people with similar interests and trying activities outside of the classroom. Acknowledging how small her major is on the Drexel campus, she’s welcomed each opportunity to experience editing and writing outside of the classroom.Â
