8 Girl Power Movies You Need to Binge Watch Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

If you’re anything like me then you love a good movie binge session. You name it, I’ve seen it. However, a lot of movies out there have a male save they day and play the leading protagonist. It bothers me that women are portrayed at people who focus on their looks or sex in movies. For that reason, I’ve compiled a list of the best girl power movies to watch right now.

Legally Blonde

Elle Woods is depicted as the stereotypical dumb blonde. However, she rises out of that stereotype when she is accepted into Harvard Law and gains respect as an intelligent and beautiful woman from her colleagues. Plus she has a really cute dog and there are some awesome wardrobe ensembles.

Ella Enchanted

A classic movie that we’ve all seen in our childhood carries a deeper meaning that if you don’t want to do something that you’re told (like stabbing your prince boyfriend in the back) then you don’t have to. Ella represents the independent princess that we all wanted to be.

Working Girl

Katherine Parker is the definition as a cut throat #girlboss as she takes the roles of her boss after she is injured from a skiing injury. If you don’t watch this for Katherine’s inspiring work ethic, then watch for the funky 1980’s fashion.

Clueless

You’ve never seen Clueless? Ugh! As if! Cher is the embodiment of all I want to be in regards to fashion, wisdom, and friendship. Even though she doesn’t accomplish a ton as a female figure she manages to learn valuable life lessons with the help of her friends.

Miss Representation

A documentary on Netflix that makes you think about how females are represented in today’s media, Miss Representation is not necessarily a feel good movie but definitely informs you on how the portrayal of women in the media is skewed and prevents females from feeling confident in positions of power.

Julia Roberts plays an ambitious professor at an all-girls college set in 1953. The institution is run on the traditional values that women are meant to marry well, not lead their own lives. Katherine Watson (Roberts) sets out to change these values in her students and encourage them that there is more to life than marriage.

Ali Wong: Baby Cobra

This hilarious stand-up set is not only hilarious but is hosted by a female comedian who complains about all things woman. Whether it be her pregnancy, her husband, or being a woman at work, Ali Wong brings up annoyances that we have all felt in the life of womanhood.

Cable Girls

Although this isn’t a movie, Cable Girls is a show to watch. Set in the 1920’s, four girls with very different backgrounds who work as telephone operators, a progressive job at the time, come together to experience friendship. This show isn’t necessarily all butterflies and sunshine, however, as they experience the dramas of romance, trust, and deceit. This show is an easy binge watch as there are 16 episodes that are 50 minutes long.
