When you think spring-cleaning, you might think of cleaning out your closet or dusting your living room. However, there are other things you’ve been neglecting for the last year that could also need your attention. Here are some of them.
1. The junk drawer
Every kitchen has one of these — the non-designated drawer where you put miscellaneous items that don’t belong anywhere else. And there’s a reason it’s called the junk drawer: because most of it is junk. It’s better to get ahead and clean it out periodically before it gets so full you can’t even open it (and trust me, this will happen).

2. Your stovetop
Take the grates off of the stovetop (with the stove turned off, of course) and scrub all of the old food and grease off. Some people don’t always clean there, but if you get it especially clean, it will leave your kitchen looking sparkly and new.
Â
3. The couch cushions
Depending on what kind of fabric your couch is made out of, the method of cleaning can differ, but the outcome will be the same. Your couch will be less dirty, and you might even find some things you’ve been missing for months now.
Â
4. Your microwave
You probably only glimpse the inside of your microwave for the two seconds it takes to throw your leftovers in, so it probably never crosses your mind to clean up the food that exploded in there a few weeks ago. Now is a good time to do that before old food makes the microwave start to smell bad!
Â
5. Your bookshelf
If you’re an avid reader, you can accumulate a ton of books really quickly, crowding your bookshelf or desk. However, as a bookworm, you find the thought of parting with your books terrifying. There are many organizations out there that can really use your donated books, so think about giving away some of your beloveds. In the end, it’s a win-win: your bookshelf is less cluttered, and you’ve helped out a good cause.

These are just five ways you can think outside of the box with your spring-cleaning. Doing these along with your standard spring-cleaning tasks will lead to a cleaner apartment and a happier you!Â
