10 Experiences of Taking the Subway in Philadelphia

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

The Philadelphia SEPTA subway system takes you from one part of the city to another in what can only be considered an adventure. The subway’s sole purpose is to provide public transportation, but it’s probably the most fun and interesting way to get around in the city and also provides its riders with some exciting experiences. Here are 10 experiences we’re all bound to have while taking the subway in Philly.

1. Digging through your purse for $2.25 in exact change

Who always has exactly $2.25 on them? Why is there no token machine in this station? Why haven’t I remembered to buy a subway pass yet?!

2. Realizing you entered through the wrong entrance

I want to go south but this side of the subway is northbound…and I already paid my fare.

3. Stepping in a puddle in the middle of the station

Is it water? Urine? Alcohol? Do I even want to know what’s seeping through my brand new flats right now?

4. Getting a glimpse of the Philadelphia wildlife

Those dirty rats and mice sure are cute! I wonder if I can bring one home for a pet.

5. Getting lost at the free interchange at the City Hall Station

This is simple. You go this way, down this corridor, down these stairs, up these stairs, and then to the left…right? Wait, where am I?

6. You hear the train coming while walking to the platform, so you run for it but the door closes in your face

At least I tried. At least I tried.

7. Here comes the train…that’s collecting garbage from the stations!

How much longer do I have to wait for the next train now?

8. The wind from the incoming train messing up your hair

Well, it’s only a first date. Maybe he’ll like the windblown look?

9. Having nowhere to sit on the train

I guess I’ll be standing for the duration of my trip unless a seat opens up.

10. The person who’s blasting annoying music through headphones

I really don’t want to listen to your poor taste in music for the whole ride. K. Thanks.

Taking the subway really makes you feel like you’re a part of Philadelphia and living the city life. Although the Philly subway system isn’t the cleanest or the easiest to use, it’s still a fun and cheap way to get around the city, and along the way, you’ll most certainly have an interesting time.
