Every year at Thanksgiving dinner my family and I go around and tell each other what we’re thankful for. Starting college for the first time will make my list a little different this year.
I am especially thankful for my education. College is often a part of life that people take for granted; but, last year as I when I filled out college applications and saw how hard it is to apply to college, I couldn’t help but feel thankful. I am especially lucky to be attending a school like Dickinson.
I am grateful to have a meal plan and a cafeteria with an abundance of food, but being away at college makes me even more appreciative of home-cooked meals. Mom’s cooking tastes even better after being gone for so long and I can’t wait to go home for Thanksgiving dinner!
As I was waiting to leave home and go to Dickinson, I underestimated just how much I would miss my family when I got here. Being separated from them has made me appreciate all that we have together, especially when I come back on breaks.
I am thankful for the friends that I still have from home and the new friends that I have made during my short time in college. All of them have made this transition easier on both ends. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything back at home, and it has been wonderful to form new bonds with people from different backgrounds.Â
Moving from a large city to a small town has made me even more thankful for my hometown. I used to feel like all the bustling in New York City was too much. But, now at school I miss the diversity and excitement of the Big Apple. I smile widely when I return home, but I know I still have a home here at Dickinson and I’m thankful for that too.
College has made me even more thankful than before.
