My Summer at the Bakery

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Dickinson chapter.

While enjoying my last summer before college, I worked at a local bakery down at the Jersey Shore, where I spend my summers. This experience was surreal to me because I had just begun middle school when my family discovered the bakery, and now I was a high school graduate working there. The bakery is open four days a week (Thursday – Sunday) from 8am – 4:30pm. I worked two times a week either the morning or afternoon shift. I loved working the morning shift because I got to set up the storefront, stage the display, and decorate/ice some of the pastries. Due to its close proximity to the beach (and most importantly their irresistible baked goods), a line would form as early as 7:30 am. Patient beach goers and residences would happily wait in line to get their sweet tooth fix. By far the best part of my job was being able to sample the treats and occasionally take some home at the end of the day. I am an avid peanut butter fan so naturally, the peanut nut butter flourless cookies were my favorite. My daily responsibilities were to take orders, pack up the treats, and ring up customers at the cash register. Although this kept me constantly on my toes, I enjoyed being busy and working with other girls my age. Whenever there was a break in the day, we occasionally go to help the bakers in the kitchen with some small tasks like peeling the apples for apple pie or making the glaze for the scones. Overall I had such an enjoyable time at the bakery and had a very positive working experience. During my time there I learned to work under pressure, utilize some of my newfound baking techniques, and work with customers and other employees of all different ages and backgrounds. These lessons and experiences were invaluable, and I know whatever I decide to do in the future, I will remember the lessons I learned at my favorite bakery.
