Why I Love Thrifting

By Shelynn Handy

Thrifting has certainly become one of those things that is the popular to do. I’ve seen tons of videos on YouTube with titles like “Come Thrift with Me” or “Follow Me on My Thrift Adventure”, and I watch every single one because I’m an avid thrifter.

Growing up with a little less money than the people around me, thrifting was usually the only option for me to get clothes year-round. Instead of being sad about having to wear second hand clothes, I challenged myself to make the cutest outfits that I could with the budget that my folks gave me. That same way of thinking has followed me into adulthood and I end up going thrifting instead of to the mall when that Friday paycheck comes.

Thrifting is my way to be fashionable on a budget. It is also my way to make sure I’m doing my part to not contribute to the waste that the fashion industry produces by buying clothes that are used and reclaiming them and repurposing them to my liking. The thrift store is my happy place.

Born and raised in sunny California but am currently attending DESU. Studying mass communications & theatre. Hopefully you'll see me on TV some day but for now, you can read some of my articles!
