The Trend We Love to Hate

By Shelynn Handy

About two years ago, a trend started to surface in America that I was sure wouldn’t catch on and would quickly turn into a fad: the “Dad” or ugly sneaker trend. It’s a good thing that I don’t want to be a fashion forecaster because I was very wrong. Two years later and the trend is going stronger than ever.

Although the dad sneaker trend had already been going on in street fashion for years in places like London, America didn’t really catch on to the trend until Balenciaga released a couple styles of sneakers that embodied the ugly sneaker trend. From there, we’d see many celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross and Yara Shahidi wearing the Balenciaga silhouette with any and everything from power suits to silk dresses.

The Dad sneaker trend is one that has not fully grown on me, but I’ve warmed to the idea of some of the more recent silhouettes. FILA released the Disruptor II which is a platform sneaker that would fall in line with the dad sneaker trend but offers a sleeker silhouette which offers more versatility when styling with street wear. It is also more affordable compared to the Balenciaga price tag, and if I were to try the trend, that is the way I would go.
