Social Media has its perks and benefits, but there are major issues behind these sites. On social media, we see the presence of bullying. Since social media is an online site it would be coined cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has the same effects that in-person bullying does. However, people try to lighten its effect, by downplaying its severity.

For example, across social media sites, I have come across individuals bullying others based on their appearance. While you may not like a specific piece of clothing, that does not mean you have to bring others down. Everyone had their own sense of style and pick out things that correlate to that. In terms of physical appearances, there are numerous instances where individuals are shammed for being “too fat” or “too skinny.” Who are you to make this statement, we are supposed to be all for positivity.

To add to insult, these comments are posted in the comment section of posts. Where everyone can see, leading to these negative comments are upvoted by others. These individuals see these comments as a source of entertainment, however, this is not something to find humor in. In the majority of these cases, these people are ridiculed by total strangers. How would you feel if someone judged you on the internet? Flip the switch and put yourself in their shoes, it would not be too funny right? Social media is a place to connect with others, not the place to be bullied by others. We should all be able to enjoy social media, without being forced to “log off” due to these factors.
