Recruiting the Class of 2023

Samantha Carter Student Contributor, Delaware State University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

This week, we had the opportunity to visit two of the University Seminar Classes in the Mass Communication Department.  The University Seminar Classes primarily consist of freshman and transfer students. The class consists of an introduction to Mass Communication, along with learning basic skills and where to locate campus resources.  Two organizations were there to recruit students, the organizations included Her Campus DESU and WDSU Radio “The Hive.” The first class was small with about twenty students that had taken place at 9:30 am. The second class was slightly bigger with about thirty five students and the class took place at noon.  Both classes were full of students eager to get into their major, beginning with joining some organizations on campus.

Her Campus DESU chapter was thrilled to speak in the two seminar classes to recruit the incoming freshman.  Although, at the beginning the student’s energy was low; after our recruitment speech they were excited. We discussed what Her Campus is, what our chapter consists of, opportunities, and more.  Below is part of our speech that was said:

“Her Campus is an online blog that focuses not only on college, but pre and post college.  We are a group of women that empower each other through journalism. Each college has its own individual chapter, we write about many topics ranging from beauty and fashion to lifestyle and advice.  Not only do we write articles, but plan events, bond, run our social media pages, and opportunities in leadership. All articles become published content that can be viewed anywhere at anytime.“

Not only did we explain what Her Campus and what DESU chapter is, but we discussed some future events that we are currently planning.  This gave students an insight into some of the opportunities they could be involved in. Along with the influence and mark we are trying to make on the campus and students.  At the end of the presentation, several students were interested in the organization and we hope they will attend the next interest meeting where they will learn more.

We would like to thank the University Seminar professor, Mrs. Ava Perrine, for letting Her Campus DESU chapter speak in the two classes.  We enjoyed this method of recruitment and would be looking forward to speaking in classes again in the future
