Crooklyn

This has to be one of my top Spike Lee films of all time. The story takes place in Brooklyn, New York in the summer of 1973. The story focuses on a young girl, Troy, and her family. Troy learns life lessons through her four loud mouth brothers, her loving but strict mother, and her musician father. It’s a movie with a great soundtrack and beautiful visuals of black New York in the 70’s. This movie will make you laugh and cry.  If you have a Netflix account, go and check it out.

The Best Man

This movie follows a writer by the name of Harper Start, writing a soon-to-be bestselling novel, loosely based on the lives of his close college friends.  Harper is supposed to be the best man at his friends Lance wedding, with all their friends in attendance.  When an advance copy of the book gets in the hands of his ex- lover, Harper tries to keep it under wraps. If you love drama, this is the perfect movie for you.

Save the Last Dance

I love this movie. This film is a mixture of hip-hop, love, dance, and drama. The main character Sara is moved from a small Midwestern town to the south side of Chicago when her mother suddenly dies in a tragic car accident. She quickly falls in love with an African American teenager at her new high school. They share a passion for dance and soon tackle the problems that come with their interracial relationship.

Why Do Fools Fall in Love

I have literally watched this movie a million times, and it continues to be one of my favorites till this day. The film is about Frankie Lymon, lead singer of 1950’s group “The Teenagers”. The height of fame turned the singer to substance abuse, that took his life at twenty-five. With his death he left behind three women, and each believes she’s owned his song royalties.

Lean On Me

If you’re a fan of Morgan Freeman this is a must see. The film is a fact-based film. A New Jersey superintendent Dr. Frank Napier watches as East Side High becomes the lowest-ranked school in the state. With no other options he enlists the help of ex-teacher Joe Clark to become the principle at the trouble high school. Before Clark can raise the schools test scores he has to try and get rid of its gangs and narcotics problems.

I hope you give these movies a try, you won’t be disappointed.
