Jharrel Jerome’s Historic Emmy Win is A Reminder That Dreams Do Come True

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

Jharrel Jerome’s historic Emmy win is an accomplishment for not just himself, but for so many others. It’s a win for young people, actors of color, and most importantly the Exonerated Five. Shortly after the release of Netflix’s limited series  “When They See Us”, Jerome’s portrayal of Korey Wise received surplus amounts of praise from people across the world. It became quite apparent that he would be nominated and receive awards for his moving performance.

Jerome is the first Afro-Latino and the first Dominican to win an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie. He is also the second-youngest actor to win the category.

During his acceptance speech, he dedicated his award to the Exonerated Five, all of whom were in attendance. He also thanked his family, as well as Ava DuVernay, who created, wrote and directed the series. The series earned a total of 16 Emmy nominations.

His historic win emphasizes to people everywhere that your dreams can turn into reality no matter you where you come from, your race, ethnicity, or age.
