How To Prepare For A Healthcare Job In Your Senior Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

Senior year approached way quicker than I expected and now it’s time to think about life after undergrad. I’ve always wanted to work in health care since I was a little kid but always thought I wanted to be a pediatrician. As I have gotten older and learned more about the profession of what it takes to become a pediatrician I realized I do not want to be in school until I am 30 ☹. After high school I decided I wanted to become a physical therapist. I looked more into the career and felt as though I was not that excited about my future career as a PT. Luckily, with my major (kinesiology) there were many options as a career without needing to switch my major! I continued to research and came across a “physician assistant”. A PA is just like a doctor, but only goes to graduate school for two years and has to work under a doctor, and can change specialties. PERFECT! Unfortunately, I did not find out I wanted to become a PA until the end of my junior year so now it’s crunch time! Those who are interested into going to medical school, physical therapy school, physician assistant school, or any school relating to medicine should gain exposure as soon as possible. Volunteer in a hospital, shadow doctors for long periods of time in order to get a letter of recommendation, gain patient care experience, and NETWORK! These are some of the things I wish I would’ve known earlier in my college career in order to be a more competitive applicant, but I do know one day I will reach my goal of becoming a certified physician assistant.
