College Admission Scandal

Candice Lambert

We’ve all heard about the college admissions scandal involving a very familiar face we mostly all know, Lori Loughlin. Lori plays ‘Aunt Becky’ in the show ‘Full House’ and the reboot ‘Fuller House’. Lorri and a few other celebrities are being held in jail for a major college admissions scandal. Lori has paid the University of South Carolina rowing coach $500,000 in order to guarantee two spots at USC for her daughters. Here’s the crazy part neither one of her daughters even row as a sport. Lori’s bail was set at $1 million. Now let’s talk about this from a college student perspective.

As a junior college student majoring in kinesiology and I feel as though the situation is absurd. All college students work extremely hard to even get into a college they really want to go to. Whether it be studying for the SAT or ACT, preparing for interviews, increasing volunteer hours, or preparing applications. The college admissions process can be very stressful for a high school student. I feel as though Lori cheated hardworking potential college students out of the opportunity to even get excepted into USC from her bribery of $500,000. Many college students do not have the family income that Lori has, so the only option is to work hard in order to get into your dream school. Lori and her family took the easy route by paying these rowing coaches to get in to the college of their dreams. These two spots could’ve gone to other girls who actually may be very talented and an asset to the rowing team. Many students and student athletes actually depend on scholarships in order to attend college, so I feel like Lori took advantage of what she had and acted very selfishly by not considering other kids who may not have the opportunity to attend USC because they were not able to receive a scholarship. I feel as though Lori demonstrated to her kids that money can get you things in life, but that’s not always a good thing. Yes money can buy things and get you places, but working hard to get where you need to be or want to be in life is way more important. The satisfaction of working hard to get to where you want to be in life will always feel better than buying your way to where you want to be.
