Basic Tips for the Curly Haired Girls
By Shelynn Handy
I typically get a lot of looks and questions about my hair on a regular basis from strangers that I come across daily. This is something to be expected when you have a fire engine red curly afro like I do. The main question I get is “How do you keep it so healthy?” and the answer is that I don’t. I use chemicals to maintain my color and I am no stranger to a flat iron. However, I do keep somewhat of a routine just to make sure that I don’t wake up bald.
- Moisturize. As a curly girl, moisture is one of the most important parts of maintaining curls and it becomes even more important when hair is color treated. Outside of daily moisturizing products, I deep condition my hair for at least 30 minutes just about every week.
- Protect. Protective styles are my ally in keeping my hair intact. Crochet braids, box braids, and weaves are my go-to when I want to give my hair a break from daily manipulation. I also love to see the growth whenever I take a protective style out.
- Trim. This is something that a lot of people like to overlook but is very important for growth. I noticed that once I started trimming my hair regularly that I could also see more growth. I trim my hair about every three months.
So, I don’t have any special secrets to hair maintenance. I just do the basics for most curly haired girls and let my hair do its thing.
