Thanksgiving: A Time For Family and Festivities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

During the holiday season, we are often so busy “dealing” with relatives or getting caught in a blur of food, parties, and gifts that we forget what it’s all about. Take a step back. Think about what you’re thankful for in your life and find a more meaningful way to celebrate.

I’d like to agree with Princess Diana, who said: “Family is the most important thing in the world,” but after bearing a helping of your aunt’s special casserole or listening to another story about why you remind Grandma Jean of a younger version of herself, you may be singing a different song. So, how’s a girl supposed to maintain family traditions and her sanity? Here are some Turkey Day activities that will liven your holiday spirits.

Pass the Pigskin.

A widespread tradition in families across the nation is the annual Thanksgiving football game- after all, what better way to enjoy a beautiful fall than by fumbling in the foliage? Whether it be boys versus girls or cousins versus cousins, a friendly game of football bonds people together, and might even let out some frustration in the process. Not football fans? Go on a hike or finish a 5k Turkey Trot together- getting active is a fun and healthy way to spend time with your family and most communities will have outdoor family events for just that reason.

Create Cheer.

Remember those handprint turkeys you made in elementary school? Rein in those artistic skills and get your hands dirty making memories this Thanksgiving with crafts like turkey wreaths, thanksgiving trees, or pumpkin candle holders. If you have younger siblings, print out placemats for fun at the dinner table or make pilgrim hats for everyone as place setters. If you’re running low on ideas check out our Her Campus Pinterest account. It’s full of ways to give your Thanksgiving a creative kick!

Gobble Some Grub.

Let’s face it, when it comes to the holidays, food is paramount. Thanksgiving isn’t nicknamed “Turkey Day” for nothing! This year, why not play with your food? Bring a new dish to the table, make a creative dessert, or put together an awesome food display. Repurpose an ice cream cone to make a cornucopia and fill it with treats for a fun and easy after dinner treat. The possibilities are endless and you can taste- test your creations!

When it comes down to it, Thanksgiving and the holiday season are about family and tradition, but if you want to shake things up a bit, don’t be afraid to try something new! It might just lead to a new tradition of family fun.
