On Tuesday, February 5th, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, addressed the nation for his State of the Union Speech; this was after the longest government shutdown in history and failure to seek approval by Nancy Pelosi to give the address. Of course, the Trump presidency has been controversial and negative for some and positive for others, but his speech cast light on unity and joining together as citizens of America, no matter one’s party affiliation. The president began his address by recognizing the many anniversaries taking place this year: 75 years since the Allied liberation of Europe in June, as well as D-Day on June 6th. This year, we will also celebrate 50 years since Apollo 11’s voyage to the moon.

“We must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution—and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good.”

If you do not take anything else away from this article, consider this. As a country, we must come together and support each other. Tearing each other down based on political views will get us no further in societal advancement. The goal of Trump’s 2019 presidential year is to bridge the long divide between Republicans and Democrats, and we have the ability to come together to better our country as a whole rather than focusing on benefiting one party’s agenda. This year is about the American citizen and how to keep our country on the path to greatness—an idea we can all get behind. 5.3 million jobs have been created, and those numbers continue to rise, which is a success that we can all support. Small businesses are taking off, which is key to prosperity for the middle class—don’t we all want to see this country succeed?

During the Trump presidency, women have become major players in both the political field and the job market.

“No one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58% of the new jobs created in the last year.”

Women are empowered, and whether it be in support of the president or against him, women are making a difference in this country! We must all recognize and support the women around us as hardworking individuals changing the world; my go-to saying is “empowered women empower women.”

“And exactly one century after Congress passed the Constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, we also have more women serving in Congress than ever before.” Whether Republican or Democrat, the success of women in the political spotlight is something worth celebrating! These will be the years of women—all of these brave and hardworking women will work to hopefully better this country, and women will continue to lead our nation on the path to success.
