Her Campus: You’re a member of the Rocky Horror cast, so tell us how you got involved?

Kimmie Klee: First of all my professor, Steve Tim, announced it to my acting class. Then he came and specifically approached me about trying out. A lot of my friends were trying out too, so I decided why not? Tryouts were the week before finals last spring, scripts were given right before we left for the summer. We were expected to have all of our lines memorized the day we got back. We started practice the second week of school, so we actually practiced for less than a month.

HC: Can you tell us a little about Rocky Horror in general?

KK: Rocky Horror is the story of Frankenstein in a sexual satire. The whole thing is supposed to be a farce. It’s based on a man… actually an alien… creating another human to be his own personal sex slave. Since the show is so hypersexual, the cast had to get very accustomed to each other really quickly.  Even though the plot is weird, the show is really enjoyable to watch. But I will say it is easier to understand if you know the plot beforehand.

HC: What is your character like?

KK: My character’s name is Magenta. I’m an alien, and I have a brother named Riff Raff. There’s a lot of sexual tension between us, but the audience doesn’t know we’re siblings until the second act—so that comes as a shocker. I’m also one of Frank’s (Frank is the alien creating a man) servants. We help set up his experiments and basically do all of his bidding. While you think we don’t have any control throughout the majority of the show, we’re working the entire time to undermine him and eventually take over.

HC: What has been your favorite experience so far with the show?

KK: In general, I’ve enjoyed meeting so many people on the campus that I had never met before. But besides just meeting people, the whole Rocky experience has been so much different than anything I’ve ever done because of the audience participation. Last Friday was the best experience I’ve had on stage because of such great audience involvement!

HC: Thank you so much for talking with us, Kimmie! Rocky Horror was certainly a show to remember!
