Walking up to the Beta house, unsure of what to expect—I was happily surprised when Jim opened the door in his crimson crew neck and a big smile. This zealous Communications major from Evergreen Park, Illinois is charming, to say the least. He is a Posse Scholar that writes for the school newspaper and is a DJ on WGRE. Get to him while you can, ladies, because in a few years he’s going to be some famous big shot sports newscaster!

HC: Do you play any sports, and if so, how have they affected your experience at DePauw?
JE: I run cross country and track, but oh man, all my best friends, for the most part, run. That made it an easy transition last year [as a freshman]. It’s loads of fun. I get t-shirts and nice short shorts, so it’s an awesome experience. Great team.

HC: What song on your iPod is constantly on repeat?
JE: Whoa, you’re grillin’ me. It changes. There are a lot of favorites. Right now it would probably have to be “Go Bang” by SBTRKT. That, or “Helena Beat” by Foster The People.

HC: What’s the farthest you’ve ever traveled to see an artist or band play live?
JE: Let’s see I went to Bonnaroo this summer in Tennessee. My top three artists there would have to be Joy Formidable, Foster The People, and SBTRKT. I also went to Kentucky to see Foster The People, but I think Tennessee is farther.

HC: Do you have a special pump up song that you always listen to before going out?A friend of his walking by the room shouts, “California Girl by Katy Perry.”
JE: Yeah I would say “Kids” by MGMT and…well we’ll go with that for now. I may come back to it.

HC: Onto the hard questions how, what do you look for in a girl?
JE: Oh man, a girl that likes good music and is open to listening to my music. A girl that likes my corny, witty jokes, someone who is down-to-earth and relaxed, nothing too high maintenance is my kind of lady.

HC: What’s the most confusing thing that girls do?
JE: I would say these days: texting. Like you’ll talk to someone for two days and it’s all going good, then nothing on day three. So I would say, with modern technology, texting makes things either fairly easy or extremely difficult. Texting, for me, always makes things tough.

HC: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done for a girl?
JE: Jeez…uh let’s see, I would say when I took a lady to a concert and we waited two hours to get to the front row. I begged some security guard after the concert to give her a drumstick. I lied and said it was her birthday, nothing too crazy.

HC: What is your biggest turnoff?
JE: Arrogance. Arrogance for sure.

HC: In your opinion, what is the perfect date?
JE: The perfect date, I would say, is a nice dinner downtown. Hopefully with a coupon or something, money’s tight these days [laughing]. After our nice dinner, we’ll walk along the lake—I’m envisioning Chicago. Then we’ll go to a gnarly concert. That would be sweet.

HC: What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
JE: Well, people always get surprised when I say I have three sisters and no brothers, but that’s not cool. Let’s see, I’ve only been in the ocean once, in the Gulf of Mexico. It was for like 15 minutes, and in that time, a jellyfish stung me twice.

HC: Any last words for the ladies of DePauw?
JE: We’ll have to see which way the cookie crumbles and teamwork makes the dream work! Yeah, we’ll stick with that one.
